First introduced in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, mega evolutions are incredibly valuable and useful to Pokemon players because they offer improved stats. Every mega-evolved Pokemon (bar Mega Alakazam in Gen VI) has a base stat total of 100 higher than its normal form and they have different abilities too. For example, Mega Venasaur has the Thick Fat ability while Mega Blastoise has Mega Launcher. As such, Pokemon fans are keen for mega evolutions to return in the Let’s Go games.
An announcement regarding evolutions has yet to be made either way, but a recent listing by toy manufacturer Takara Tomy Arts is inspiring some hope. Takara Tomy has confirmed that it will be releasing a line of new Pokemon gachapon, including figures based on Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Venasaur, and Mega Blastoise. These figures will cost 200 yen ($1.79) and will go on sale in Japan in November, which is the same month that the Pokemon Let’s Go games release.
The fact that the mega evolution figures will launch alongside Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee is a pretty big indication that the games will feature mega evolution forms. Takara Tomy will be banking on the renewed interest in mega Pokemon to drive sales for these figures, while the general hype around the Pokemon games will even drive sales from players who don’t fully understand what a mega evolution is.
The Pokemon Let’s Go games will introduce several new features to the franchise. It was recently confirmed that Pokemon Let’s Go will introduce requirements for gym battles, for example, while new features such as motion controlled Pokemon catching, auras, and changes to the way that Pokemon earn XP will also shake things up.
While these changes may well be for the better, the games will be a delicate balance between new and interesting features and returning fan favorites that players already love. Mega evolutions are one such fan-favorite feature which many are hoping makes a grand return in the Pokemon Let’s Go games.
Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee release on November 16 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
