Pokemon Legends: Arceus was released worldwide in January 2022 and is part of the eighth generation of Pokemon games. This game introduced alpha Pokemon, a variety of Pokemon that appear in Hisui with increased combat capabilities. These can be identified by an alpha symbol next to their name as well as glowing red eyes.

U/Gundam-Gun shares this odd clip involving themselves and an alpha Garchomp while traveling across the world of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In the clip, u/Gundam-Gun is staring at an alpha Garchomp near Icebound Falls. This Garchomp, instead of behaving normally, is running in tight circles, completely ignoring this trainer. After this player’s confusion wears off, they try to get the alpha Garchomp’s attention by throwing a crunchy salt, a type of bait in the game. This proves ineffective and so u/Gundam-Gun throws out plump beans to break this cycle. Despite this being one of Garchomp’s favorite bait, even this doesn’t end the constant running, leaving u/Gundam-Gun confused and without the chance to capture this elusive Pokemon.
U/Gundam-Gun stumbled upon what must be a bug or glitch in the game. Normally when it comes to capturing alpha Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Arceus players need to have a high Obedience level in order to do so without getting into a battle. Even without that though, players typically can trigger a fight and capture them through a normal Pokemon battle. Regardless of that, having an alpha Pokemon run in endless circles is far from a normal encounter.
Fortunately, despite making some changes to the usual Pokemon formula, preserves the core gameplay of past entries. Minor adjustments to that formula has resulted in a fresh feeling and helped foster some strong reviews for Pokemon Legends: Arceus without detracting from what has made this series successful.
Then again, there are some in the Pokemon community who were pushing for a dramatic change. Recent titles in the Pokemon franchise have followed a similar formula that was introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue. Regardless of how players feel about the game, all can agree that this is a strange encounter in the game.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus is available now on Nintendo Switch.
