In Pokemon GO, players are able to feed berries to Pokemon at gyms controlled by their team. This will restore some of that Pokemon’s health, raise their CP, and reward players with a small amount of stardust. However, there is also a 1 in 85 chance that feeding a berry to a Pokemon in a gym will get players that Pokemon’s candy, meaning that this is yet another way to farm for Magikarp candy in Pokemon GO.

Of course, a 1 in 85 chance means that players will likely be burning through a lot of berries just to get 1 Magikarp candy, but it should still speed up the process of evolving Magikarp regardless. Plus, players can use this opportunity to grind for some of the various medals in the game, like winning gym battles (when they need to take over gyms), and feeding Pokemon X number of berries.

Basically, players should be putting Magikarp or Gyarados into every gym they can, and feeding them as many berries as possible. When playing with friends, be sure that one person puts in a Magikarp and the other puts in a Gyarados, as only one of each Pokemon can be in a gym at any given time.

While this may seem like a waste of berries to some, it’s worth pointing out that berries are very easy to come by in Pokemon GO, and that any berry will do. Nanab Berries seem like some of the least-used berries in the game, and so one could use them all to feed Magikarp and Gyarados in gyms as opposed to just throwing them away to make more room in the bag. Not to mention the new Field Research quest system often gives players berries as rewards, so dedicated players should already have more berries than they know what to do with.

Before players start feeding berries to all the Magikarps in town, there are a couple more things to keep in mind. One, players can only feed 10 unique Pokemon every 30 minutes, and only 10 berries can be fed per Pokemon in the same time frame. Secondly, players can actually feed their own Pokemon left at gyms remotely, though the berries won’t be quite as effective in terms of healing that Pokemon.

With all this in mind, players should have yet another method of obtaining Magikarp candy in Pokemon GO and speeding up the process of evolving Magikarp into a Gyarados.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
