Hatching Pokemon out of eggs has been a staple of the franchise since Pokemon Gold and Silver in 1999, and carrying eggs that hatch after a certain distance covered has likewise been a part of Pokemon GO’s design since 2016. The kinds of Pokemon that can be received from eggs has varied, typically to coincide with certain events, but today’s adjustment affects the general hatching pool, with the in-universe explanation being seasonal change.

Three categories, 2KM, 5KM, and 10KM eggs (each delineated by how much a player must walk to hatch them), have new possibilities to hatch Pokemon from throughout the first five generations of mainline games - though 10KM eggs primarily feature Generations 4 and 5. Niantic also outlines what can be received from Strange Eggs, which tie into a new Team GO Rocket event that offers players the chance to catch Shadow Mewtwo.
With the exception of eggs that players receive as Adventure Sync rewards, the current Pokemon GO egg pools are as follows:
2KM Eggs
Generation 1: Zubat, Poliwag, Cubone, and Magikarp Generation 2: Mareep, Wooper, and Snubbull Generation 3: Volbeat, Illumise, Wailmer, and Swablu Generation 4: Buizel and Buneary Generation 5: Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, and Minccino
5KM Eggs

As Pokemon GO makes its way into the Halloween season, Niantic has announced what players can expect through November as well. Venusaur will be replaced by Gengar in the Mega Raids rotation on October 23, and Venusaur will be featured in November Timed Research at the same time as players will gain more options to earn Candies and Mega Energy.
Despite having been released four years ago, Pokemon GO is clearly still a juggernaut for The Pokemon Company, and it helps that the developers can keep its content fresh by cycling through the series’ hundreds of unique monsters. Other companies have attempted to replicate this success, for instance Bandai Namco with the mobile game Pac-Man Geo.
