The Pokemon Trading Card Game was first published 1996 and essentially gives players the chance to battle each other outside of the video game with cards representing the Pokemon, items, and other trainer characters. Pokemon GO is an augmented reality mobile version of the Pokemon video games that was developed by Niantic and released in 2016.

On Twitter, the official account for the Pokemon Trading Card Game revealed a release date of July 1st, 2022 for the expansion based on Pokemon GO. The expansion will include a Team Collection, Premium Collection, and Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box Plus. A link to the Pokemon website posted with the tweet announces that further releases for this expansion will come at a later date, but the first wave will become on July 1st. It also says that booster packs for this expansion will only be available in Pokemon TCG: Pokemon GO Mini Tin, Pokemon TCG: Pokemon GO Collection, Pokemon TCG: Pokemon GO Special Collection, and more.

This expansion is sure to bring those fans of Pokemon GO to the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Expansions of the Pokemon Trading Card Game are always welcome, as are new players. Both games have been booming in popularity lately, especially with Pokemon GO introducing the Alolan Region recently, so this expansion could prove beneficial to both Pokemon properties.

The card game version of Pokemon does come with a bit of a learning curve, but as long as players know the Pokemon battle mechanics well enough from the video games, it should be a smooth transition. Niantic has also been working on its own non-Pokemon game as of late which could be a reason it would want to attract more players through this expansion and the same goes for the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

New expansions for the Pokemon Trading Card Game do tend to be lacking in quality every once in a while. There is always the risk of wasting money and cards not being worth the money paid. That being said, there are usually at least one or two rare cards in expansions like this, and bringing Pokemon GO into a Pokemon Trading Card Game expansion could bring something a little newer to the table with all that the mobile game has to offer as a Pokemon game in general.

Pokemon GO is available now for Android and iOS devices.
