Rumors have been swirling recently that Darkrai, a Ghost-type Mythical Pokemon, would be released during the month of October. Players have speculated that Darkrai would be released as a Special Research reward, not unlike prior Mythical Pokemon releases. For example, both Mew and Jirachi were Special Research rewards. However, this new datamined information has thrown that rumor for a loop.

Under the id code “V0491_POKEMON_DARKRAI” is the boolean variable “is_transferable,” which has been set to true. This is especially significant because previous Mythical Pokemon Mew and Jirachi weren’t transferable when they were made available as Special Research Rewards. The logic follows that, since Darkrai’s info is being changed, that it’s nearing release. And that since it is transferable, it won’t be made available via Special Research.
Nothing specifically ties Darkrai to a potential Pokemon Go Halloween event. Nothing has officially confirmed a Halloween event, for that matter, though it’s all but certain. Pokemon GO has, in all years past, held a Halloween event. And during those Halloween events, Niantic has always released a new wave of spooky Ghost-type Pokemon into the game. This is why Darkrai releasing as part of a Halloween event makes sense, as a raid boss or otherwise.
It’s likely to be a week or several before Niantic officially confirms its plans for Halloween 2019, and Darkrai if it’s a part of it. Niantic only just announced that the upcoming week will be a celebration for World Tourism Day in partnership with the United Nations. That, and the remainder of September, are likely to put off holiday shenanigan announcements until later. Pokemon GO Halloween fans just need to be patient. Darkrai news is certain to be coming before too long.
Pokemon Go is available now on iOS and Android devices.
