Niantic released a press statement telling the company’s fans that it would be partnering with the Punchdrunk theater company to create more immersive experiences come to life on the stage. According to the announcement on Niantic’s blog, these two companies will be working together on multiple projects to reinvent storytelling and push the bounds of interactive entertainment. While neither company aren’t saying any specifics on what these projects will entail, the press release mentioned that they will be using augmented reality to create a narrative that will be like walking into a video game.

Punchdrunk has proclaimed that the company is excited to work with Niantic to take the sense of adventure that players find in video games and take it to the real world. In tearing down these walls, the artistic director of the theater group says that they can create a world that becomes a stage for everyone involved in the story. The prompt of this artistic journey is the question “What if we were the lead characters in an epic adventure movie?” and this collaboration aims to pull the audience into the performance using augmented reality to find the answer.

While fans can’t be sure exactly what to expect from this new collaboration, Niantic is reminding fans of the mobile game Catan: World Explorers will be coming to the market soon. The augmented reality company is still showing players that it’ll be continuing to create these popular games while expanding its horizons.
