The press release for City Spotlight was very careful to heavily remind players about playing safely and social distancing. Pokemon GO’s event planners coordinated with to ensure that the event was designed with social distancing and the local health and safety regulations in mind. The idea is to offer players a chance to walk around their city, enjoy socially distant bonuses, and discover special locations that they may never have noticed before.

For this first round Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea each have a city that is being featured. It’s possible that the United States will have to see some lower numbers of reported coronavirus cases before one of these events makes its way to that territory. That said, Niantic didn’t announce how frequently City Spotlights were going to happen, so it could be a handful of months or longer before the next round of cities is announced anyway. For now, players in Tainan, Kyoto, Auckland, and Busan should mark November 22 on their calendar and start preparing for a day full of walking around and catching Pokemon.
